I’M HANNAH FREY, AND I’M HERE TO HELP YOU LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE!

Here on Projekt: Gesund leben, I unite two of my greatest passions: health and writing.

My name is Hannah Frey, and I’m a 30-year-old health scientist, blogger, and author of several cookbooks as well as nutrition and wellness guides. My goal is to help you eat well with little effort – even when you’re stressed out or strapped for time.

Here on my blog, you’ll find tons of simple, real-world tips for leading a healthy life. There’s also lots of quick, all-natural, easy-to-make recipes free of refined sugar – and yes, that includes all kinds of breakfasts, desserts, and treats!

I also show you how much fun it is to eat this way – without any lectures or guilt. Because it’s only when changes are simple and enjoyable that they can be integrated permanently into your everyday life.

That’s why most of my recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less, and many are ready under 10 minutes (!): including my Overnight Oats, Porridge, and Chia Puddings. You’ll find an overview of all of my recipes here.

I love cooking and developing new recipes: I could spend hours at the organic supermarket or the cookbook section of the bookstore (and I do!). And even though recipe development has become a big part of my job, cooking is still a form of meditation for me – it gives me a sense of peace and allows me to relax. Complementing this lifestyle is my love of yoga, fitness, and other forms of training (especially strength training).

Below, I’ll give you a quick overview of my personal and professional path to an all-round healthy and happy life (the German national daily WELT sums it up even quicker)! If you’re new here, have a look around – you’ll find all the most important info here.

Oh, and by the way, I grew up in Rhineland, in Western Germany, but beautiful Hamburg on the Elbe river has been my home for years. :-)

My story: how did I get here?

Ever since I can remember, health has played an important role in my life. My dad is a dentist, and I pretty much grew up in my parents’ practice. Dad would have loved it if I’d followed in his footsteps and gone into medicine – but at the same time, he (and my mother) always encouraged me to forge my own path and follow my dreams.

But it wasn’t always so easy for me – especially while I was finishing up high school – to figure out just what exactly those dreams were. The possibilities these days are endless, which doesn’t make the decision any easier. For a while, I warmed up to the idea of studying medicine – even though it was clear to me even then that deep down, I really didn’t see my professional future in a hospital or doctor’s office. Nevertheless, I began training as a nurse. Not long after, I had to admit to myself that it really just wasn’t for me – so I switched to studying Public Health and Nursing Science. It was the best decision I could have made.

Suddenly I was on my own

Of course, a lot changed when I left home after graduating from high school and began my training. My parents had always attached great importance to a healthy diet and exercise: I played tennis from age five onward, and in spring and summer, my whole family cycled 60 to 100 kilometers together every Sunday. When I moved away from home, I was suddenly the only one responsible for looking after my diet and making sure I got enough exercise. First I attended a vocational school, where I worked shifts at the hospital; after that, my studies allowed me a lot more freedom. There wasn’t much time for cooking (or eating), so I ended up consuming a lot of processed foods or eating in the dining hall or cafeteria.

For a short while, the temptation to eat all the unhealthy things we didn’t have at home was just too overpowering. And I was hardly exercising anymore. What happened next was predictable: I put on a few kilos and no longer felt as fit or powerful as I had before. I would have terrible energy slumps during classes, especially around lunchtime – I was so tired that I could have just fallen asleep right there in the lecture hall.

And then it all clicked …

I realized that this all must have something to do with my “new” lifestyle – and since I was in the process of becoming a health scientist, this realization took place relatively quickly. Things just weren’t working and I needed to make a change! As a health scientist, you have an obligation to be a role model to others – but more than anything, I just wanted to feel good again. So I started to eat according to the Clean Eating concept and exercising regularly again – and since 2013, I’ve been sharing my experiences with the Clean Eating lifestyle here on Projekt: Gesund leben. By the time I started working on the blog, I’d already finished my studies; before that, I’d been blogging about health for two years.

These days, I’m feeling better than ever: I’m at the right weight for my body, I’m happy, fit, and productive, and I don’t have any more of those mid-day slumps! But while I’m trying to live as healthy as possible, it’s super important that I never become rigid or dogmatic about it. I’ll also have the occasional slice of conventional cake or ice cream – as long as things are in balance, it’s all part of a healthy lifestyle where body and soul alike are nourished.

A dream comes true: from blogger to book author

These days, writing is not only my hobby, but also my profession! In March 2015, one of my biggest dreams came true: I published my first book, Clean Eating – Natürlich kochen. I’d wanted this since I was a kid – and I’d never thought I’d put out a book by the time I turned 26! Clean Eating – Natürlich kochen was followed by Gesund im Büro in June 2015 and Clean Eating – Kochen mit Superfoods in September 2015. In short, 2014 and 2015 were all about researching and preparing these rewarding projects.

I really enjoyed this kind of work and knew immediately that I wanted to write more books. When, later in 2015, German lifestyle and cookbook publishing house Gräfe and Unzer asked me if I wanted to publish a book with them, I could hardly believe my luck – I love their books! In February 2016, they published my fourth book, Clean Eating Basics, and have been putting out my books ever since.

February 2017 saw the release of Coconut Cooking and Zuckerfrei: Die 40 Tage-Challenge; the latter stayed on the Spiegel bestseller list for weeks, and was one of the 20 best-selling cookbooks in the first half of the year! My first bestseller! You can imagine how stoked I was. Meanwhile, thousands of readers have participated in my Sugar-Free Challenges – I’m thrilled to have reached so many people and helped them achieve a healthier life.

In February 2018, I published Zuckerfrei backen. This was a huge step: cooking savory dishes sugar-free is obviously not that difficult, but baking without refined sugar is a completely difference issue!

My third Zuckerfrei book, Zuckerfrei für Berufstätige, was published in February 2019. Zuckerfrei für Berufstätige also had the honor of making it onto the Spiegel bestseller list!

In May 2019, my ninth book, Inner Glow, came onto the market – a book that’s particular close to my heart. It’s here that I describe the holistic approach that truly reflects how I live my everyday life – which goes beyond eating well. The basis for this book was the successful formula I’ve come up with for my retreats (see more below). Since I’m aware, of course, that not everyone has the time or resources to take part in my retreats, I’ve written this book to allow readers to take a “self-guided” retreat at home. Inner Glow also features tons of new recipes.

As you can probably imagine, I’m already working on my next round of books … :-) Unfortunately, they’re not available in English yet.

MY COOKING COURSES AND RETREATS

In 2016, I gave my first cooking course in cooperation with chefkoch.de. A lot of readers had been writing in and asking to meet in person, plus I’d always wanted to meet my readers, so this seemed like a great solution.

I enjoyed my first cooking course so much that I went on to deveop two signature workshops: “Clean Eating Basics” and “Clean Eating to Go,” both of which I held throughout 2017 and 2018 in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, and Vienna.

In addition to my cooking classes, I wanted to translate my holistic approach to healthy living into a “live” format. I’d also been looking for something along these lines for myself – that is, a retreat that encompassed nutrition, fitness, and stress reduction – but wasn’t able to find anything.

That’s why I decided to design my own holistic retreat, reflecting my own personal values and approach to healthy living – the exact kind of program I’d been searching for myself.

In 2017, I announced my very first Projekt: Gesund leben Retreat here on the blog. The immediate response was beyond what I could have imagined: the retreat was fully booked in less than 24 hours!

Since 2018, I’ve also been leading retreats on the Spanish island of Mallorca, in the boutique hotel Cal Reiet in Santanyí, as well as in Tyrol, Austria at the organic hotel Stanglwirt.

MY OTHER PROJECTS

Apart from writing new books – which includes developing recipes (find out more here) and countless other tasks – I have several other things I’m working on.

Most of my work centers on updating my blog with new posts and recipes and maintaining my social media channels, especially my Facebook groups, where I engage with the community and answer readers’ questions.

Of course, organizing my cooking courses and retreats also takes up a large part of my time. Besides the “on-site” work – that is, actually running the retreats and courses – there’s a ton of prep and follow-up work involved in pulling it all off!

I’m also a brand ambassador for a number of companies and businesses, including California Almonds, which I’ve been representing here in Germany for years. I also run cooking courses specifically designed for bloggers, influencers, and businesses.

Recently, I’ve been at work on my first online course. If you want to learn more about it, you can subscribe to my newsletter – you’ll also receive my free Project: Zuckerfrei e-book (both in German only – for now!).

Maybe you’re wondering how I manage to get everything done – after all, there are only 24 hours in a day! The truth is that at this point, I wouldn’t be able to pull it all off without the help of my four awesome employees. ;-)

If I’m able to inspire you to start your own Healthy Living Project, and join you on your journey to a more balanced life, then it’s all been worth it!

All the best –

HANNAH FREY

P.S. My work and I have been profiled in various media outlets, among them FAZ, WELT, Bild, Stern, Rheinische Post, Brigitte, Shape, Fit For Fun, Chefkoch, and many others.
